McCall's 3830 again - Green silk shantung "Statement Skirt"

Do you have any idea how much it pleases me to have made something in silk that I actually like? And in a fabric that I've been saving for something special? Of course it helps that this is my TNT straight skirt pattern and I've made it quite a few times. Maybe this will turn the tide of silk wadders I've made over the years.

This fabric is a silk shantung purchased from Fabricmartfabrics.com several years ago. It was $20 per yard and is still the most expensive fabric I've ever purchased. But it has beautiful yellow embroidered flowers all over it and y'all know how I feel about the color yellow.

The reason it sat in my stash for 2 years is because I wanted a straight skirt with a waistband and could not find a pattern. I thought I'd found one on Etsy but the seller lost the pattern and refunded my money. Then Butterick came out with 5466, which I bought, but then debated back and forth about it because it looked really tight in the waist on the model. Last month I made it in muslin and guess what? - really really tight in the waist! Bummer! But at least I hadn't wasted my fabric. Then I decided to use my TNT skirt pattern and pair it with the waistband from the Butterick pattern to get the look I wanted. Now why didn't I think to do that a few years back?!

When I made my fall/winter must haves list, this was the garment I had in mind for item #6, the statement skirt. But now after seeing statement skirts for several months, I think it needs to be an over-the-top fabric is a solid color that can be dressed up or down depending on your whim. So I'm not sure my version fits the bill. I still really like it, though.

I used a fun bright yellow polyester from Fabric.com for the lining. Sewing with bright colors really makes me happy. The invisible zipper I had to special order from Zipperstop in NYC as the color is not a shade JoAnn's or Hancock's stocks.

This skirt has been completed for over two weeks but I never could find the time to get it photographed. I tried again on Sunday but would you believe there was a fingerprint on the lens and all the pictures came out blurry?! Justin was able to take these tonight which is one reason I really love daylight savings. There's also a dress that I've finished and hope to get pictures in in the next few days.

  1. That fabric really is gorgeous - the green and the yellow! No wonder you were saving it for the right skirt (franken)pattern. I love skirts with waistbands - it really finishes it off and makes it comfortable to wear. I also think they look really good :)

  8. Beautiful! It really is a special piece - isn't it great when you save special fabric for the right piece and it turns out just the way you wanted? I love the skirt, and I think it is totally a statement piece, even if it might be hard to dress down. Oh well, guess you will just have to look spectacularly dressed up ;-)

  16. Oh, what a gorgeous shade of green! And the flowers -- roses? peonies? -- are amazing. I think this is definitely a "statement" skirt. Don't be afraid to concoct your own waistband. Most of them are merely a long rectangle. You can cut a strip of the correct width (double the desired finished width, to allow for folding it over in half the long way, plus twice the seam allowance) and yards long. Don't worry about how much too long it is: pin/baste it onto your garment and cut off the excess at the ends.

  19. Oh Amanda! it's perfect.
The fabric and fit is great.
    eee!

I've been known to stash favorite fabrics for years, too. I find it so difficult to cut into something so beautiful that I might mess up. I can totally relate!

so glad it turned out how you wanted.

  22. Such a beautiful emerald green and yellow silk skirt. YOu were absolutely right to choose such a well fitted simple TNT skirt for this. Enjoy wearing this !

  23. Looks good. Makes a statement of "I love color." Fabric was made for simple shapes like a straight skirt. And you could dress it down: with tights, flats or boots, a white T, leather jacket, nude lipstick and and ponytail. For instance. :)

  26. Gorgeous! I, too, have been looking for a straight skirt with a waistband. So odd that such a basic pattern isn't available anywhere! You are motivating me to work out my perfect-fitting skirt.

  27. Beautiful fabric - I'd be cautious about cutting into too unless I was certain I had found the right pattern. Actually I have quite a few pieces of those special fabrics in my stash, waiting for the right pattern....

You got a great fit too, so very flattering. I hope I bounce back to shape the way you have after I have this next baby of mine!

    Thanks!

  37. Chantal,
Thanks for your sweet comment. No, I did not make the white blouse. It's by Tommy Hilfigure and I bought it at Macy's on clearance a few months ago. Sorry!

  39. Hi Amanda,

I came across your blog and was wondering if you had any advice for someone new to sewing. I've never sewn in my life and am interested in learning... and I'm hoping to teach myself. Am I crazy? Is it possible, or am I going to fail without experienced supervision? I bought a few books to teach me the basics. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Michaela

P.S. You are so talented! I love all of your creations!

  40. Love your blog, just joined but have been following for a little while. Love the skirt. Great construction and fit.
Your blog is where I learned of Fabricmart, and I so love it and hate it, every day they draw me back in with too good specials. My fabric stash is soon going to draw too much attention and cause an intervention, lol.
I buy fabric and let it dictate the garment, much like your skirt.

    1. Hi! I don't know of any special tips for sewing with this type of fabric. It's a dry clean only fabric so don't wash it! Also the needle holes will show so make sure you make a muslin. Good luck!
