Butterick 5283 - Yellow bamboo knit top

A few weeks ago I came to the conclusion that only 3 tops in my wardrobe currently fit. Apparently I like fitted clothing, and as I am nursing my baby, I needed... bigger tops. Enough explanation for you? So, enter this pattern, which looked kind of loose through the midsection.
Well, I suppose it would be looser were it not for the baby weight I still need to lose. But it is super comfortable and I love the fabric. Fabricmartfabrics.com has carried this bamboo knit for awhile now, which I have ignored because it's a little pricey for me for a knit. But they were running a buy $50 worth of fabric, get $10 off deal a month ago, and I had $40 worth of fabric in my shopping cart. It's yellow - which I adore - so I thought why not give it a try? Surprise! It really is lovely, with a wonderful drape and is a little thicker then an ITY knit. Plus it seems to hold up well in the washing machine. I'm planning to purchase more the next time I find some other fabrics to order and they're running a sale.

The front twist and asymmetrical neckline is what I really like about this design. I've also used this pattern for the other twisted front view, although that top has the annoying habit of creeping up the bust and needing to be tugged down.

I'm sparing you a back or side view - too many lumps and bumps at the moment.

I did plan to make a few more roomier tops, but when my mom came to visit last week we went to a great resale store. I must admit I had previously turned up my nose to Goodwill. It seemed like a place poor people go. Not that I'm shopping at Neiman Marcus or the like. Really, I'm not a snob. Anyway, they actually had some nice stuff, and it was a very clean store and well organized. Did I mention inexpensive? I found cashmere sweaters, people. For $2.99!!! Also lots of bigger tops, so I don't have to hurry up and crank those out. I hate to sew under pressure.

Here's a picture of baby Rachel, who is now 5 weeks old. Does she have some crazy hair or what?!

  1. Looks great and I love the color! I'm so impressed that you can find the time to sew with a 5 week old baby! I got NOTHING done for at least 2 months after I had each of mine! :) Looks great - and so do you! (Baby is ADORABLE!)

  2. What a cute little girl :) You look great for 5 weeks post partum, too. I agree, fitted clothes and nursing/post-partum body are not the best, but the top is great.

  3. I've been obssessed with yellow the last year! You are looking very well. And, I've had a trunk (well car full) of stuff to take to the Goodwill for a week now. Boots from Israel, clothes I've made and suits from when I worked at Lord and Taylor. I've not done well with finding things myself, but I certainly give them lots of good stuff!

  8. I love your top - I try to sew now ONLY with Bamboo Knits when I'm going that direction in a solid - I like not only that it is "green" but the texture is fantastic. Probably a little hot for summer in Texas, but they do have some fabrics that are lighter. I have a heavy mustard yellow. I love your newborn! What a good mommy!!

BTW, I live in thrift heaven (in Ventura, CA, also known as "vintage" california) and I almost NEVER shop thrift (for clothes) - I don't know why - I've honestly tried.

  13. I love the expression on Rachel's face in that photo! I shop at Goodwill all the time. It really depends on the store, but mine is really big and clean. It amazes me the things that people just give away! Just last weekend I bought two really nice Banana Republic blazers for five dollars - you just have to be willing to look through stuff.

  17. Rachel is so beautiful, crazy hair and all! I have that knit top pattern pulled out to make soon, so it is nice to get your feedback. I'm glad you were able to find some treasures at the thrift store. I went today and found some killer items, Eddie Bauer jacket, a gorgeous LL Bean sweater, some knit tops still with the tags on...it was everything the clerk could stuff in the bag for $3.00. My bag wasn't completely full so she sent me out for round 2...I made an amazing haul!

  30. Beautiful top---both style and color! Yeah I'm a big Goodwill shopper, or I used to when I had the time. It's amazing how much Nine West, and other big name brand stuff I've gotten for super cheap. BTW, little Ms.Rachel is such a CUTIE!!!!!

  32. You look adorable! As does the baby! Those lumps and bumps, which I don't see are well earned, and won't last! P.S - Most men love the lumps and bumps. LOL

  33. Your daughter is adorable! So precious. I love the color yellow also, I just can't wear it. And I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a thrifter...have been for years. Although the name brands and great deals are getting harder and harder to come by as more people discover the treasures within the walls of those stores!

  42. Vogue Fabrics online has bamboo fabric...I think it's like $14.00 a yard and they have a great shipping deal last time I looked.....

  43. I'm totally feeling you on the need-new-tops-for-nursing front: we just had #4, and I'd forgotten how NOTHING seems flattering or fits properly! In regular, non-post-baby life, you and I are about the same size, and people tell me all the time I look great for having a new baby, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating when I'm up and trying to get dressed each morning. I have some of this exact bamboo knit--I went for the chartreuse, since I have redhead coloring--and am loving this pattern for it! Good to see you back at the machine--that yellow is super pretty on you.
