Wow! Baby clothes are certainly quick to make up! I bought the fabric for this little skirt yesterday, washed it, cut it out, and sewed it up the same evening. I recently purchased this RTW top from Old Navy but didn't have anything to match it. However, JoAnn's had the perfect pinwale corduroy in a cute butterfly print.
I made the XS for Rachel for this coming winter. The envelope back lists the XS for 1-3 months, but after comparing some of her 3-6 month clothing to the pattern pieces, I realized that baby patterns have just as much exorbitant ease as womens' sizes.
I added a little ruffle to the back hem for fun. I used french seams on the inside and slipstitched the waistband down so no zigzagging was necessary. This is a great pattern for simple basics and I plan to make lots more from it. I traced the size I needed instead of cutting the pattern out so I can use it in the future for other sizes.
More cuteness to come!
Cute set - baby clothes patterns are always big, worse ease, I think. When Hayley was 9-10 mos old, and she was average on growth charts, I was still making the small/maybe extra small sizes. I just measured whatever she was wearing well in the bodice of RTW and compared it to the corresponding pattern of measurements and lengthened or shortened the skirt accordingly. I still do that. She's almost 3, wears a 2 in RTW, but patterns can be a 1, the 2's are still too big in the neck/shoulder area. Vintage patterns work as a 1, just lengthen the skirts a bit if they seem too short.
ReplyDeleteOh my word what a beautiful little ensemble . I love it !!!

Too cute! I love baby clothes for a quick instant gratification project. And they take so little fabric! I do think the ease in baby patterns is worse than adults though. My little ones are always at least a size smaller than their measurements, and it gets worse in the smallest sizes. Myra was 6 lbs at birth and the Simplicity XXS was still enormous on her. She couldn't wear it until 3 months or so.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Aren't you glad you had a girl? Looking forward to her future wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I have this same pattern, and have made the skirt and dress for my DD, who is now 16 months old. It IS great, quick and easy! And, yes, I did have the same trouble with the sizing.
ReplyDeleteI know Rachel will look cute in her outfit!
Sooooo very cute!!!! That is the cutest tiniest little skirt!!! Awwwww!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a cute outfit! Yes, the sizing is ridiculous, and it continues through all the sizes. DD wears a 6x/7 and can still fit into a size 5 on the big 4 patterns.
ReplyDeleteI love little girl baby clothes. That skirt is adorable!!! I look forward to your future projects.
ReplyDeleteThat little girl is going to grow up a fashionista just like her mommie. Adorable outfit!
ReplyDeletetoo cute!
ReplyDeleteI've had the same experiences with ease in baby/toddler/children's patterns. My daughter has always been tinier than the average child of her height, so I do a lot of adjusting - esp. at the waist. I do love making those tiny clothes, esp. the skirts - best instant gratification!
ReplyDeleteMy oh my, you aint gonna be able to stop making those cute baby girl clothes now are you! :)What a lucky girl she is.
ReplyDeletelove seeing baby clothes! so cute!
ReplyDeleteYou might like to try out Ottobre Kids magazine, the patterns are super cute. And the mag is definitely worth the money, for a few bucks you get around 40 adorable patterns.
ReplyDeleteYour baby girl is going to be the most stylish girl ever!
Rachel is clearly going to be the best dressed little girl in Texas! This skirt is so cute, I love the ruffle at the back. The fabric is lovely - I know how much you like butterflies - I think that Rachel will be loving them too after wearing this beautiful skirt.
ReplyDeleteHow Sweet! Does this mean we will see mother daughter ensembles?
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful news. I have just read the news and am glad for you. Best wishes and a nice time with your little princess. She's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThe new outfit for the little lady of course ;-)!
Do you ever sew for your boys? Very cute, and I can see that there will be lots of little dresses to come.
ReplyDeleteAdorable. I just made the dress for my granddaughter. I used three different cordinating prints and used matching bias turned to outside to finish armholes and neckband. Love it. Your skirt makes me want to whip one up for Sophie June.
ReplyDeleteAdorable outfit.
ReplyDeleteThat is the most adorable outfit!! The corduroy butterfly skirt is sooo cute!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute little outfit! I actually really like sewing baby clothes because it's a nice way to practice new techniques and then when I see them on adult clothes, they're much easier to handle. Keep these cute little projects a comin'!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I would love to try to make some baby clothes for my sister's baby (now four days late!) x
ReplyDeleteAdorable! Love that fabric! The ruffle is a beautiful touch! I have this pattern, but haven't sewed it up yet. I keep going back & forth on what fabric I want to use. I just need to grab something & do it. :)
ReplyDeleteVery cute outfit! I have a question that doesn't relate to this particular outfit and don't see any other way to contact you. This pertains to ITY knits. How do I know it is an ITY knit when I am in the store looking at fabrics? I have checked the ends of every bolt I see and never see that term. I even asked the store clerks and they had no idea what I was talking about. Help!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I'm so impressed you're finding time to sew already--my baby girl is 3 months old and the only sewn clothes she's wearing I made while I was still pregnant!
ReplyDeleteMy girl is currently (barely) fitting into the 3-6 month sizes I sewed her, but they are definitely bigger than RTW baby clothes--in those she is wearing 9-12 month sizes!
Such a precious ensemble! Rachel will be a very stylish baby!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute outfit! My cousins are adopting soon and I hope to make their new baby some cute outfits as I don't have any children myself. I'm new to the world of sewing and blogging. Stop by http://purl2tog.wordpress.com/ to see my creations as well.
ReplyDeleteOk, I had to smile seeing this post. I used that exact pattern to my twin nieces the jacket, dresses and embroidered their initials on the front. I also used that fabric to make my oldest daughter a shrug. This set is too adorable! What a lucky baby!
ReplyDeleteI love it!! I'm so excited you're going to be sewing little girls clothes.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute with that striped t.
