I needed a top to wear under my new jacket, so in keeping with my resolution to not buy any ready-made garments for a year, I decided on this pattern. I already had the knit in my stash. Instead of tucks where the shoulder band meets the front bodice, I gathered that area. I also cut it a bit more fitted at the waist then the pattern is designed. The bottom band was a total accident. I forgot to add 1 1/2 inches to the bottom and it was too short. But I really like it and think it adds a little interest to the hemline.
Here on the side view you can see the little bust gathers.
I used bias tape around the neck and armholes. I'm glad I did because this knit has some cotton in it and the neck would have been totally stretched out by doing the 5/8" narrow hem that the pattern calls for. I had to redo the front bias tape once because I got it too loose the first time and had some gaping issues.
This is not something I would usually go for. I guess I might consider it too plain or too easy. However, I think I will be making a few more of these in the future. It turned out so cute and is very comfortable. Here's the pattern picture. I actually bought this pattern because I love the jacket and am planning to make it this winter.
Too cute! I love knit tops!
ReplyDeleteI really like the knit top. It looks very RTW. I would probably buy the pattern for the shirt cause I have way too many jackets on the horizon.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
Lovely top and it fits perfectly! Well done!
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable!! I need the pattern. Love the jacket too.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking top. Love the gathered shoulder treatment. Very elegant on you. I'm getting this pattern.
ReplyDeleteThat top turned out great! I am inspired to try working with knit. I am so impressed by your attention to inside seams using binding tape, adding full linings and french seams. Where did you learn to do these extras? Is there a book or website that you can recommend?
ReplyDeleteHi emilya,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your nice comments. I started with french seams after I made a sheer top and didn't want the seam finishing to show through. Then I thought I could do the same thing for other garments as long as my fabric wasn't too thick. I've always been a fan of full linings. They really make a garment hang nicely and I detest slips. I just started using binding tape in the last 6 months or so, mostly because I look at other sewing blogs and glean useful information from what others do. I've actually never read a book about sewing, although I have a few on my Amazon wish list. If I had to pick one blog that really does a good job of showing useful construction, it would have to be tany's. It's http://tanysewsandknits.blogspot.com.
All of your projects from the past week are sooooo good, Amanda. I like the new vest choice, too. You are inspiring me to make my own skirt for an upcoming wedding. I can't find anything ready made, and I already have the outfit in my mind! Looking for a pattern for a high waist pencil skirt...any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteHi, Lynneb,
ReplyDeleteThanks! I've been having a lot of fun sewing lately. Vogue 8425 comes to mind for a high waist pencil skirt. I've never made it but have liked this pattern for awhile. You could leave off the belt loops if you wanted. I would be sure to add boning to the waist facing so the top of the skirt doesn't roll out. Do you belong to Pattern Review? It's free and you can read up on other people who've made a specific pattern. You can get inspiration or find out if there's a problem with the pattern.
Amanda
Thanks for the insight, Amanda. I'm going to look at the Vogue pattern now!
ReplyDeleteI love this top. I wonder what it would look like with the addition of sleeves? Hmmm, I might have to find out.
