Oliver + S Sailboat Pants

This is my first try at the Oliver + S pattern line. I actually own 7 of their patterns but haven't been able to use them thus far since the size ranges start at 6-12 months. Rachel is 16 months old, but still wears 3-6 month clothing and 0-3 month skirts/shorts/leggings. She is a tiny little thing.
I made the smallest size and took out 1/2" per leg, resulting in a 2" narrowing of the all over width. They are still really baggy.
Her legs are tiny little toothpicks and these are swimming on her. The backside is really baggy as well:
I know she's just a baby and nobody else will care about the sizing issues, but I care. I made these to fit her body and they don't.
Anyway, it's a nice design and the pattern is drafted perfectly, but it's too big for now. I thought at first I might try to tweak it to get a better fit, but that seems like a lot of work for a pair of baby pants. I may use the front "pocket" piece with another pants pattern that goes down to newborn size and create my own frankenpattern.

I am going to try the sailboat top from this pattern next. Look for that in the next few days.

  2. I think they're super cute! Certainly not skinny jeans, but very nice. :-) She looks so sweet. I keep meaning to try one of their jacket patterns for little boys.

  4. You LO is a tiny thing, but cute as a button. The pants look great on her, baggy or not. Who knows, in another 3 months it might be perfect.

  6. She has room to MOVE!! :D They look a smidge too big, not a lot too big. Better too big than too small.
You do beautiful work. What sewing machine do you use?

  12. I have to admit, that I enjoy seeing pictures of Rachel as much as seeing your beautiful sewing. She looks so cute in the pants. Thanks for sharing.

  13. I love O+S patterns and have sewn many of them for my sons and my daughter. They are all drafted so well! I'm sorry these don't fit your little one yet - she will grow into them eventually though! I love the denim you used - I don't think I've seen the Sailboat pattern made up in denim. You should consider posting pictures to the O+S pattern flickr page with a link back here.

  16. So sorry about the sizing issues, and I'm sorry I can't be of any help, but I just have to say your little girl is the most super-cute baby! Just so adorable!

  18. Hey Amanda!

I have three skinny kids and one of them is rather like a stick figure. There are no patterns available for a skinny child. Everything must be adjusted and tweaked.
Seriously, I make muslins for my kids and try to use TNTs as much as possible. That's the only way I can be sure to get something that works.
I know that isn't much help, but know that you aren't alone in having a child that doesn't fit the pattern companies' ideas about the size of children.

  19. I tend to make a size smaller in pants and just lengthen the legs which isn't much help when you already have made the smallest size. I think these pants are a great fit, they look really comfortable. I can't bear to see babies in skin tight clothing anyway.

  20. She has the most beautiful round eyes. What a sweetie? Oh, wait, were you talking about pants? LOL. I dress all of my kids in baggy clothes with sleeves and hems folded up. I call it "homeless waif chic."

  21. Hm, I meant to say "What a sweetie!" Not sure how that question mark got in there. Whoops!
