I told you last month I'd be purchasing the magazine for December as well. If you are interested in where I get them, I order from GLP International. They charge $10 per issue, and that's with the shipping included.
The reason I had to have this month's copy is because of this coat:
I love all the seaming, the Peter Pan collar, the oversized pockets. I really want the exact ivory color as seen on the example, but lighter color wool coatings are hard to find. There seem to be an over-abundance of dark and muted colors available from the online fabric stores I frequent, but hardly any bright or light hues.
Skirt 105 is also a pretty, flattering style. It reminds me a lot of this skirt, but without the front ruffle. I also very much like the skirt suit they've created with the shortened version of 104, but think all the beautiful seaming on the jacket is lost by using such a textured fabric.
Dress 107 is gorgeous! Love the intricate tucks of the bodice, fitted & shaped midriff panel, double ruffled sleeves. There are a few things I'd tweak about it - mainly those front gathers below the midriff panel and the unnecessary vertical seams in the front and back bodice.
Faux fur jacket 113 is the sewing course for this month. I have seen these little fur jackets popping up everywhere lately and want one too! It should be an easy project to whip up using some fabric that's been languishing in my stash for at least 5 years.
Lastly, I really like the looks of gown 129, even though I have no where to wear it nor any possible reason in the future to need an evening gown. Maybe I could use it if I cut it knee length...
The January preview is already online here, but there's really nothing much that interests me in it. Perhaps this is the last copy I'll purchase for awhile. Are there any of your favorites that I've missed?
I was going to post Rachel's new overalls earlier this week, but she got them dirty before I could take any pictures. Kids are so messy! Anyway, they have been laundered so I should be able to snap some pics later today.
I, too, loved the look of the coat but I wondered about the lack of a walking vent in the back. It's looks very fitted (not A-line) and I'm not sure how you would walk without a vent. A-line coats don't need a vent but something that slim probably does.
ReplyDeleteOh the coat is lovely! And I couldn't agree more about the finding of light colored coatings. I've been on the hunt for a lovely light blue/teal color for ages. Never can seem to find anything in just the right hue. I too have been toying with the idea of a fur something and I love the look of that jacket. This is so tempting! I might just need to call up GLP!

That coat is fantastic. Here's a little prayer that you find a pale woolen soon. And as for Rachel's overalls being dirty: why not do a before-and-after shot, to show how well they launder? It might help some mother of a young child decide to sew up some simple garments for their own little one, to sew how well a handmade garment holds up under real life wear.
ReplyDeleteNice picks! If you find the ivory wool coating, please share the source. I've been looking, but have not been successful. I especially like the faux fur jacket. I hope you make it soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm making dress 107 soon. It's soooooo gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI too adore that coat! I love all your other picks too as well as the green long-sleeved dress (model 120).
ReplyDeleteI've also already made up the cute little sweatshirt dress (model 141) and it is so adorable! This really is a great issue.
Ooh, hope you find your wool coating. Ivory coats are just lovely. I just traced a version of that fur coat pattern... I couldn't resist. I can't wait to see what you do with it!
ReplyDeleteI have really been wanting to purchase that month's issue. I followed your link and could only find subscriptions (3 mon minimum). Do you have the direct link to purchase just one month, or did you get the 3 month subscription? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLinnea,
ReplyDeleteYou just have to call them and place an order for a single magazine. The phone number is on their website.
Amanda, I just purchased some Burnt Sienna Shetland Wool from FabricMart.com and it really is quite lovely and coat suitable. Here is the link to Buttercream.

Hi there I just came across your blog today and I am in such awe of your sewing skills. I started sewing a few years ago when I had my first child and I just could not imagine getting to your level. I find it hard to follow a pattern. Is there a trick to it. I usually replicate something out of my wardrobe, which can be a bit rough as it isn't with a real pattern. Any tips? Are patterns that hard or trick should I just persist?
ReplyDeleteHi rach,
ReplyDeleteMy advice is to find someone who knows how to read patterns and can show you what to do step by step. Or maybe take a sewing class that focuses on patterns. Or perhaps buy some of those "learn to sew" patterns that are written for beginners. HTH!
I have been wanting a little fur jacket, too. I know yours will be very pretty!!
ReplyDeleteThat coat is lovely. I don't know whether it's any use to you, but there is a UK based online shop - fabric-world.com that has some cream melton in it's winter woollens section. I ordered a sample of the grey, and it is lovely, but I'm at work at the moment and can't remember if there is any actual wool in the fabric. It's worth a look. love the blog by the way!
ReplyDeleteThat coat would look fabulous on you!
