It's wash day around here and I put this skirt in the machine, on cold of course. (I was planning on letting it drip dry.) Except I should have put it in a garment bag on the gentle cycle, because look what happened:
The fabric has raveled out into the skirt body and there's no way to fix it. Guess I'll salvage the zipper and trash it. Gosh, that was so dumb! Anyway, just letting you know because I promised to post pictures of it this weekend but won't be able to now. :(
I'm sorry that this happened. It seemed like a nice skirt. Did you use a serger on the raw edges?
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame! It is hard to see from the photo - is that a yoke? Would it be possible to replace it with a plain white or black one? Is there any way you could save it? It looks like beautiful fabric, so sad :-(
ReplyDeleteOh, so sorry. Linen does ravel very badly. I know you don't have a serger, but you can still zig-zag stich the edges or turn each raw edge under and stitch. It looks like this happened where you removed the flaps and the seams may have been too thin there. Too bad. :(
ReplyDeleteJust a thought...but is there any way you could cover this with a belt loop; add one to the other side and wear it with a belt? I guess it would have to be a pretty wide belt.
Amanda, I'm so sorry the laundry gods were not smiling on you today. I would set it aside for a few day and sleep on a solution before trashing it. These ladies seem to have a few good ideas that might be worth consideration. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteOh NO!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved that fabric. I think you should get more fabric and make another one!!! It is one of my favorites that you made! Maybe take Kristine's advice and think about it for a few days.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about your skirt. I agree with everyone. I wouldn't throw it away just yet. There may be a solution.
ReplyDeleteNO!!! What a shame. Can you set a piece in and perhaps stitc a black motif ovrr it? If you don't have more fabric, may you can take some from the hem?
ReplyDeleteAll those are great ideas and I would have mentioned them. Try it, what have you got to lose?
ReplyDeleteIs there any way you can get more fabric of the same and just replace that specific part? Maybe you could salvage some of the material and use it elsewhere. I once sewed a beautiful dark blue shirt and forgot to take it out of the washing machine. My mother used it right after me and put some bleach in the wash. You could imagine the rest......
ReplyDeleteOh crud! That has happened to me before -- not the actual garment but forgetting to take special care with the fabric I was treating -- I put it right in the dryer, pulled it out and.... I still have it, I'm not sure why.
ReplyDeleteAww, bummer :( So sorry that happened.
ReplyDeleteAmanda - I have more of that fabric if you want it. I mean if you WANT to remake the skirt? Its yours for the asking...just email me.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that happened to you after all your hard work. I've actually had seams ravel out like that on quilts. I agree with Kristine, set it aside and ponder it for a few days. Perhaps some sort of cool embellishment would fix the problem. Pam
ReplyDeleteOuch! I feel the pain.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about your skirt. You did do such a lovely job on it. Before trashing it, please try to salvage it, if not take Carolyn up on her offer.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn - I hope you might stop by and read this. I do NOT know how to find people's emails from comments. The computer is not often my friend. Anyway, thanks so much for your kind offer. I have decided to put the skirt aside for a little while and come back to it later. Perhaps I will be inspired then to fix it then. I have enough scrap fabric left to cut a middle yolk piece, and that is probably what I'd opt to do instead of remaking the entire front. But thanks so much again. That was really sweet of you.
ReplyDeleteAmanda
Amanda - no problem but if you change your mind let me know. I have quite a bit of it and now only need a yard to use as accents on a dress.
