McCall's 4870 - Heart neckline dress with flounce

Here is my latest creation.

Here is a close up of the front. Notice the red rick-rack around the neckline and sleeves.

Here is a view of the back:

This dress was no picnic to make. I was going to post a link to McCall's website and this pattern, but it has been discontinued! It seems like I just purchased it a few months ago. Honestly, it was poorly designed so I'm not surprised. Here is a scan of the line drawing:

Look closely at the straps in the back. Notice how thin they are. Yea, those do not stay on the shoulder! This is how I first made it, then I had to redesign the straps 2 more times before they would finally stay on my shoulders. Not fun! In the final design I had them meet at the back in a V. Normally I might have been tempted to give up after the first two tries. This is why I didn't:

Right after I bought the fabric for this pattern, I found these shoes and had to have them. They match the red in the dress perfectly! I really love this outfit now, and am happy I persevered. What do you think?

  4. Thanks gals!

Amanda's recipe for shedding baby weight:

-Live in a two story house
    -Be slightly forgetful
-Run up and down the stairs at least 20 times a day for things you've forgotten!

  5. part of me dreaded that we might leave texas and end up in a 2 story house. when i found out we WERE in fact going to 2 stories i embraced the idea whole-heartedly. i committed to not complain but to THANK GOD every time i go up and down because it is forcing me to strengthen leg muscles i would NOT have done otherwise... i've been too inactive the last year or so - and what could have been an inconvenience of stairs turned out to be a blessing to my body! :)

  6. Gosh, this is beautiful!!! I love it. And the shoes are a knock out! I hope I can find this pattern. I love rick rack used in that way - I trim skirts for my girls like that (6 and 9).

How do you have time to sew. With all the homework and housework and 3 little ones it takes me a long time to crank things out. I am slow like you say you are and I do like to line a lot of things.

    Thanks for your blog!

  7. I know this is an old post, but I came accross it through a link for "sweetheart neckline". This dress is amazing and you are quite beautiful. I love how you were so candid with how difficult it was and how much you detested the redesign. I think your perserverence (sp) paid off! Lovely!
    Sincerely, in HIS service.
