Simplicity 8296 - Navy + White Off-The-Shoulder Blouse

Off-the-shoulder blouses are currently everywhere: in stores, magazines, and pattern catalogues. I don't always make the newest trend right away, probably because I like to see what other people make first or which patterns seem to work the best. This time, though, I happened upon the perfect fabric. This navy and white embroidered gingham is from Moodfabrics.com. It is the loveliest of weights for a blouse, and has a slight amount of stretch to it not included in the description. There's only a little bit left as of this post. I highly recommend you snap some up!

I chose Simplicity 8296 for it's slightly fitted shape and cute sleeve ties. So many of these styles of blouses have elastic around the entire top, and I liked that this one has a smooth band in the front. I cut this blouse in a size 10, one size down from my typical 12, because I wanted a closer fit and because my fabric had some stretch. I did use the length of elastic for the 12, though. Thanks to weight-lifting, my shoulders have broadened somewhat. I also cut about 3 inches off the bottom hem. This top is almost tunic length as drafted.

One great thing about this design is that I do not need to keep tugging the neckline down my arms. Garments that need constant readjusting just do not end up being worn much by me. I like to put clothing on and go about my business.

Since the fabric is cotton, it behaved very nicely while being stitched up.

I cut the top front band and sleeve ties on the bias for some visual interest. You can better see the fabric texture in the following close-ups:

This is a really great pattern. The front darts give it a fitted shape, which I prefer when working with these types of slightly crisp blouse fabrics. I already have plans to use the pattern again for a dress in the next few weeks. What do y'all think? Am I ready for a backyard BBQ?

Note: This fabric was purchased with my Mood Fabrics monthly allowance, as part of my participation in the Mood Sewing Network.

  3. Very nice! I had the same thing happen to me after weight lifting. All of my close fitting shirts and jackets are too tight! Oh well, I guess it's a good reason to make some new ones.

    1. Haha, it was definitely a surprise! I haven't tackled making anything too fitted through the shoulders lately. I'm really not sure what I need to do as it's not an adjustment I'm use to making.

  4. I really like the shirt - and I usually don't like the off-shoulder look. But the band in front instead of the elastic does make a big difference. Really cute!!

  7. Such a fantastic top, I love it!! The fabric and pattern is a perfect combo, I'm not keen on the full elastic so think I need to try this one (if they sell it in the uk??)

  8. Super cute! I wanted a similar top a few weeks ago and went to JoAnn to get a pattern and all the ones on sale were sold out! I was annoyed and went out and just bought the top I wanted. I do have to adjust the shoulders, though. Kind of annoying.

    1. Argh, annoying! If there's the store Hobby Lobby in Florida, you should hit them up for pattern sales. They stock 3 to 4 patterns in each size and always have what I want when JoAnn's doesn't. I don't think many people know they have patterns.

  9. Dear Amanda
It's simply gorgeous! I love the style without gathers at the décolleté, and the sleeves are so cute and give an unusual character to the blouse. I have do admit, that I've already ordered the pattern.... I need such a blouse, too! Thank you for the inspiration!

  11. Now that I have finally procured a strapless bra (after a good five years without) I plan on making many an off the shoulder and spaghetti strap top this summer. Love these colors for you. You look very crisp.

  12. Beautiful! A personal question--what do you wear under the top? Strapeless bra? I'd love to try one of these tops but sometimes what needs to be worn underneath is not comfortable
    for me.

    1. I wear a strapless bra under it. It's comfortable to me - I don't have much going on up top. ;)

  13. Love your Mood Fabric choices (Sadly Mood does not have an easy way for APO addresses to order lovely fabrics). Luckily there are other on-line options and fabric stores in Europe. So I'm happy to see your gingham embroidered choice - I've seen similar fabrics here and had never thought of using them in the way that you did in your blouse. Thank you so much!

    1. Thank you Susan! I made another off-the-shoulder top recently and had to keep pulling it back down my shoulders. So annoying! My next thing to cut out is this top in dress form because it's cute and not fussy. Enjoy making it!
