Burda 9-10-116 - Mustard yellow wool pencil skirt

It's been over a month since I last posted anything due to the disappearance of my sewing mojo. I think this happened to me a few years ago around the same time. Maybe I'm just needing a break after the business of the holidays. Well, I have managed to make a winter skirt using a pattern I've previously sewn that didn't require the making of a muslin.

After sewing my red leather version, I had no intention of ever making another one. The style is pretty unique. However, that other version is one of those skirts that migrates around my body every time I wear it. You know that kind of skirt, right? I don't know if I got the lining off grain or what. Also I didn't have enough leather to make the back vents so I have to take tiny steps when I'm walking. Getting in and out of the car is difficult. Consequentially it is now living in my "needs attention" area of the closet. Someday I hope to reuse the leather for another garment. Since I still really like the style of the skirt, I decided to remake it in a yellow wool crepe

This fabric was an online purchase several years ago. I can't remember exactly where I got it from. The lining (not pictured) is some inexpensive polyester stuff bought because it perfectly matched the wool crepe. Yellow is horrible about show-through, so I knew I had to match the color precisely. The matching zipper was ordered from Zipperstop.

The seamlines show up on this fabric much better then on the leather. At the back you can see the double kick pleats, which make this version much easier to move around in.

The pegged shape of this skirt won't fit over my dressform, so here are some close-ups on me:

I'm really happy to add this pop of color to my winter wardrobe.

  1. Your construction is, as ever, impeccable. Even though that particular shade of yellow is my least favourite colour in the world, I still think your skirt looks wonderful.
What a shame about the red leather version. Perhaps you could add the kick pleats to it by facing them with a contrasting fabric? Say something like the silky paisley used for lining high-quality jackets? Just a thought. It's always a pleasure to see what you've been sewing.

  5. This skirt is so great - I love the pattern and the way you made it up. But what a shame about the red leather skirt. It is really stunning, what a shame it is not practical to wear.

  9. Beautiful! Regarding the twisting of the red skirt, could you safety pin the lining to an undergarment to keep it in place?

  21. This is fantastic! I love how it works as both a statement piece (those gorgeous seamlines, and interesting back construction, the happy, sunny color) and as a closet staple (pencil skirts go with EVERYTHING!! Solid color...) A very smart piece, in my opinion! And your construction is, as ever, impeccable.

  22. I love that color! Mustard is seriously one of my favorite colors, and I've been lucky for a piece of fabric in the perfect mustard for awhile to no avail. I guess I'll just have to keep looking! :)

  24. Your skirt turned out lovely, that color is very refreshing... it's enough that we see dark colors all winter long... so nice to see something besides winter colors. This is great! Oh, and by the way... maybe a possible help with the leather skirt, there is a product that they put into men's trousers to help keep a shirt tucked in... it's applied to the waist band. It might help keep your skirt in place, it can't help with the vent although... I would look for a scrap maybe to use to make yourself a vent... it wouldn't have to be perfect but boy if you could add to the inside seams it might do the trick. Good Luck! I do like your red leather skirt too... such a pretty color and the pattern is great too. Too bad I can't copy Burda patterns any more... too many lines.

  29. As always your construction is perfection! The color is a great element to brighten up the winter months even though they are short here in TX. I live outside of Houston and tend to wear too much black when it's cold.
