Okay, now I'm annoyed...

Oh my gosh, are you kidding me??? Another wadder?! I am so super frustrated! I'm currently working on my second top from Butterick 5328. You'll remember a few posts ago where I wrote I made it but didn't love the fabric. This time I used a cotton stretch poplin in a lovely apple green color which is the perfect match to another print fabric. I had planned a whole outfit. Unfortunately, this top has horrible wrinkles under the bust. I thought maybe a bigger busted gal could make it work so I stuffed my bra with some of hubbies socks. Nope. Still getting ugly wrinkles.

Any suggestions? I'm really bummed. I've wasted a great fabric and 3 nights sewing time. Yes, I did make a muslin (of sorts), but no, I didn't notice the under bust wrinkles until I went back today to try it on.

I'm not seeing the wrinkles on the pattern envelope!!! I once read on someone's blog that they never buy a pattern without a real live model with the actual garment on the pattern envelope. Good advice. Wish I'd followed it this time around.

  1. I think it looks fine! In fact I think it looks great!

  2. It looks to me like there is to much fullness in the lower part of the bust. I wonder if you moved some of the fullness higher if it would please your eye more. If you make it again you could fold some of the fullness out of the pattern. You still look cute in it. Maybe it's a little big on you too.

  3. Hi Amanda.
It could be worth trying to redistribute the gathers to spread further along the neckline. I have made a blouse with a similar neckline and it's all about where those gathers sit.

  4. I know exactly how you feel about wadders. It seems like wadders breed wadders in my experience. Just take a deep breath and keep at it.

  5. I agree with redistributing the gathers. it looks a little big through the middle too. Does it feel large? If you pull up the neckline a little in the front do they disappear? Just a thought.

  6. It still looks cute on you. Sometimes we are our own worst critic. I agree with the above suggestions, if it's that troubling to you, perhaps raising the gathers a bit would redistribute them to be more pleasing to your eye. But really, truly, it does look nice on you.

  7. I love this top on you. The color and fit are gorgeous :) hope you don't toss it. ;)

I've made this top twice and I'm a fuller boobie girl and I still have the wrinkles under the bust.

  8. I think it looks fine. This is just a thought, I wonder how it would look in a knit of sorts, going down a size. I have had patterns that did not work in a woven, but are fine in knit, something with a little weight and has drape. Just a suggestion...

  9. OH! Super frustrating! I'm so sorry again! It doesn't really look that bad. I do see what you are talking about but will a non-sewer? It looks like there is too much fabric shoulder to waist. Can you take up the shoulders a bit to make it smaller without making the armholes too small? Sometimes it's better to just chuck it. But, really, it doesn't look bad. Sorry, reading this, I sound super random. Overall, it looks fine.

  10. It looks good, and the color fits you well. I'm glad you tried it again! I have a fuller bust, and I also have the same wrinkle under the bust. I really love this pattern, and after seeing yours, I think I might have another go at it. And seeing the nice color you chose, I think I'll go out of my confort zone and try a bright color. I also have to force my self not to buy black...Anyway I don't think yours is a wider, I think you should finish it and wear it! Chantal

  11. Wadders or projects that aren't working can be so deflating, can't they?! {{Big hug}} I can relate. It's not that you are doing anything wrong. Things just don't go your way.

Honestly, I like your blouse but I understand that it's not to your satisfaction, which is what really counts. Such a pretty fabric too. Bummer! I hope someone has a workable solution as I can't think of any at the moment. Sorry!

Be gone pesky wadders! Just don't pass them to me. LOL!

  12. Hi Amanda! First time commenting-I enjoy your blog and I am always so impressed with your sewing, especially the inside finishing. Sorry this isn't working for you- it's looks beautifully sewn though.

  13. It looks like it's too long from shoulder to waist. Did you take a CB waist measurement? If so, and it matches the pattern, I would redistribute the gathers.

  14. Hi! My name is Kay, I happened upon your blog, searching for a picture of a white shirt dress with a red belt. It led me to the pic of you in the red striped shirtdress. I have to say I am fascinated! I am not a sewer at all, I helped my mom a little bit when she made things for me as a child, but I never picked it up. I have a passion for paper. I'm a scrapbooker.
I looked at a lot of your work, and I'm amazed at how talented you are. Your pieces are beautiful, and beautifully done. I can appreciate that! I don't have a blogger blog, but I follow several here, and I have a blog over on Live Journal. Hope we can be friends.

  15. It's a pretty blouse in a great color for you. Although it looks good, you probably won't wear it if the fit doesn't suit you. It does look about 1/2" too big on the side and perhaps redistributing the gathers will help. Keep smiling!

  16. Okay, you people have convinced me to try fixing this top. I'll post my attempt or FO in the next day or so. Tiger is playing in the US Open and I really like to sew with golf on, for some reason. :)

  17. I am so glad you decided to stick with it. It really is quite flattering as far as color and style. I think the redistribution of the gathers and possibly taking in the shoulders will do it. See what you can pin out and go from there.

  19. Hello,

I am usually a lurker, and I did not read all the comments, but I agree with the first dozen or so... first it looks fine, second I think you would benwfit from redistributing the gathers. I have a blouse I love(actually several all the same but different colors, lol) that have similar gathers, with no drooping below the bust. I checked them out, and the gathers are fuller above the bust point, and then diminish to almost none below, they do go much further down than it appears this pattern indicates. One thing to note, is my tops are RTW and I am full busted. I also noticed that the waist darts on mine really snug the top in under the bust, and remove alot of baggage in that area. I did not look closely enough at the patter to know if there are even darts there, but maybe adding them would help.

Second Idea, I have a wrap tee almost identical styling to this top, it has a single row of elastic about an inch from the original gathering line, a design feature, but I am sure it helps hold everything in place. They used a chain stitch with a heavy upper thread and elastic thread in the looper, and the detail follows from hem around the neck to the hem.

Good luck with your solution, I am sure you can make this work.

    Crystal

  20. I saw on PR that there were only 3 done by 2 people. One of the reviews suggested that it was only recommended with modifications. Sorry it wasn't a success for you.
