November Burda picks

Yeah. I ordered another one. And I really like the looks of the December issue too. Now I am thinking about re-subscribing. But you can bet the minute I do they will go back to pillow-cases-posing-as-dresses and already-seen-it-a-thousand-times designs. As long as I don't buy the subscription they might keep up the trend toward more interesting clothing, right? You may all chime in with your thanks now.

Wait, what was my point for writing this post? Oh yeah.

Up first is jacket 104. Lets see - fitted jacket, interesting design lines, really cool collar and shoulder tabs - it pretty much has my name all over it. I will have to un-petite it, though.

Next are some rock'in leather pants, 108. I'm posting the picture of the garment as the drawing is pretty ugly looking. These are made from metallic leather, but I do have plenty of cream leather hides that would work. Do I need leather pants? Where the heck would I wear them? I've never had a particularly warm leather jacket, but I'm wondering if leather pants would make me hot (temperature wise). Lots of questions for this one, but I like the looks of them non the less.

It's a jacket - no wait, it's a cape. It's a jape cacket jacket-cape. Well, whatever it is, design 118 is definitely interesting looking.

I reserve my final opinion of dress 119 for when Allison finishes hers. It's hard to see how this dress looks from the magazine pictures. Both the short and long versions have the model sitting down; one is made up in black and the other photographed half hidden in shadows. Again, though, I'm intrigued by originality of the design.

Dress 120 is THE REASON I bought this issue. I love a dress with long sleeves and that ruffle down the front is perfection. Love. It.

Dress 123 is certainly a sexy little number. It's relatively simple but still interesting with all those front pleats coming together at one focal point. The one on the model in the magazine doesn't fit her all that well, so I'm anxious to see this made up.

Dress 126 is a formal gown that I have nowhere at the moment to wear it to. You never know, though, I might decide to make it up for some future theater show. Again, this dress does not fit the magazine model. I am wondering where they got this poor woman. All of the clothing they gave her to take pictures in are skin-tight and puckering at the seams. Except for the long blue taffeta one, where she appears to be sans clothing and is holding it up to herself while smoking a cigarette. Bizarre. I do think this dress is really pretty, despite the fit issues.

So there you have it. I'll be purchasing the December issue as well because there is a coat in it that I just cannot live without.

  1. That cape/jacket has me intrigued, too. I'm wondering if I'm brave enough to try it...

I came to the conclusion that the dress was held up in front of the model because it fit so poorly they couldn't photograph it on her and this was the only way they could think of to get her and the dress in the same space...

  2. The "model" is actually apparently a German TV star (talk show hostess type? Not exactly sure), so she isn't your typical Burda size. Also, it is possible that is why all the fancy dresses go 38-46 instead of the usual 36-44. Doesn't really explain the smoking photo, but I suppose it sort of explains the thought behind the starlet photo shoot in general.

Regardless, I am in LOVE with the past 3 issues of Burda (October - December). So I thank you muchly for doing your part to ensure their awesomeness by not subscribing ;-) I am also excited by that coat from December, although I personally can't live without the new trench coat pattern myself.

Ironically, I actually started my subscription with the October issue (funny, because I HATED September, but the day I saw the October early preview I subscribed...). So far I am most pleased with my subscription, can't wait for January!

  3. I really liked this issue too. I have kept my subscription through thick and thin, some 20 years I think (and yes I have all the issues). Sometimes it take a couple years for the styles in Burda to show up in US RTW and by that time the style has grown on me.

  4. I really love that sheath dress with the starburst pleats. I also think that yes, you do need cream leather pants, no question. :-) The dress you linked to is lovely too. It makes me want to get that issue as well, but I know myself, and I just don't do that extra step to trace these patterns off, and they sit unloved in their magazines.

  5. Interesting picks, I really like that long sleeve dress. As for leather pants, I have had them and they are a bit warm, not really as comfortable as other pants. And I found since I had spent $ on them I was always looking for a reason to wear them, to the detriment of other clothes. But it would be a challenge!

  6. I'm so happy with what I've seen in Burda the last few months. I just finished spending an hour re-organizing my issues. There were random pattern sheets in the wrong places and I get batty when the magazines are out of order and I need one. I'm not a subscriber as long as Audrey, just since 05. But, I have random issues from the years before. It's well worth having a collection of patterns!

  7. Re: the model. I read on another blog that she's a German actress. I suspect that the dresses were made for a fit model, and she did not fit them. They also said she was not a curvy / big as she may have looked in the ill fitting burda clothing.

  8. I am wanting to resubscribe now, too. The past three or four issues have been fabulous. I haven't bought any of them, but I am tempted by this November issue. How much is the shipping from GLP?

  9. I loved both those jackets as well, and would love to see someone take on that cape-jacket. Burda has done some pretty good issues lately. Sigh, if only those pattern sheets were more readable! Leather pants just seem like one of those things I have to try some day. I wish I could get my hands on stretch leather!

  10. Here's a link to a French blogger who made the black dress. She posted the FO for now and promised in the comments to post a photo of her wearing it so you can see it on a real person. So watch that blog...

  11. Yes, this issue has many lovely designs! Thanks for your post. If only I had more time to trace and sew!

  12. I like your logic, it's the same as mine: as long as I buy individual issues they'll keep being awesome ;)

  15. That ruffle front dress is my first pick as well. Already have one planned (of course, I already have about 50 projects planned...).

  16. These are all really nice! My subcription ended a couple of months ago, but I will still buy on a per issue basis--Burda has not won me over again yet!

  17. Amanda: I saw your comment on Kyle's blog about how to find out about the PR events. There were notices on the PR message boards, in Deepika's email and also on FB. Are you FB friends with PR? If not, you should be!

I actually thought about you after I returned because I flew in and out of San Antonio and remembered I followed someone's blog from San Antonio. I'm sorry you missed it. It would have been nice to meet you after following your blog and your wonderful creations for so long!

  18. Thank you for the vicarious Burda thrills. I have such mixed feelings about letting my subscription lapse, too.

    I looooove dress 120.

  19. I ditto the last commentor.
Amanda thank you for leaving a comment on my blog. I'm so glad you did because it lead me to discover yours. Despite the age difference between us, we appear to have similar taste . I have the Vogue tops pattern in your previous post and love what you did with it.(but you are so slim of course it won't look the same on me ). It's on my list for January which will be a month of tops for me.
    Love your blog!

  20. I'm strangely drawn to the jacket/cape, but then again I do have a bit of a thing for capes lol! Thanks for the round-up x
