Gratuitous baby pictures and thanks

Thanks so much to everyone who chimed in on the breastfeeding issue. I just wanted to let you all know that I have NOT decided to stop nursing. I had my milk tested and it has higher calories then formula so there is no reason to switch. The pediatric endocrinologist also gave Rachel a clean bill of health. I suppose there might be a few more visits to specialists in the near future, but I have decided to stop worrying about her weight and just enjoy her for the joy she brings us.

I bought this dress last summer in anticipation of having another large baby. When she was born I was a little sad that so many clothes I bought her would never be worn. However, since she's still very tiny, I am finding that lots of them are fitting this spring. (This dress is size 0-3 months and hits right at the knees.)

Oh! I almost forgot to mention that I have changed my pattern choice for my Easter dress. I decided not to make Vogue 1174 right now since the top has to fit so snugly and the girls will be shrinking down to regular size after I'm done nursing. Vogue 1176 was my next choice, and aside from a few minor fitting issues, it should be done by tonight. Then it'll be a race to see if I can get Rachel's dress completed by Sunday.

  3. i just gave birth to my tiniest one thus far. she is my third one as well.
i just wanted to let you know that you are doing great. Breastmilk is the best you can offer to her. i wouldn't worry about her weight anymore, especially since you know she is a healthy little one.
my advice would be that once you introduce solids to start with avocados. good fats and might help her get some chunks.
remember that children develop differently, even if all of them come from us.

  10. My three year old grandson weighs 26lbs. He was on the first percentile when I took him in for his physical.
He was a formula baby all the way. Don't let the drs. scare you. By now your mothers intuition is rolling along, trust yourself.

  23. What a gorgeous baby!

There's two babies down the street from me, they both just passed 2 years. The little girl stayed tiny and the boy grew and grew... now that they're two, though, the girls still tiny but has the vocabulary of 10th grader. The boy is still giant, hardly talks, but appeared to be out pruning the shurbs the other day...it's been fun seeing how they develop so differently!

  24. Glad she got the clean bill of health! As a mom, it's torture to worry about the health of our children. Keep on keepin' on.

  25. How adorable she is. You'll be glad that she is on the small size as you sew for her in the future. She'll be able to wear cute, little girl styles for a long time!
All babies/children are different and have their own unique growth patterns. Rachel is just petite!

  27. Rachel is a cutie! I didn't get to read your text about breastfeeding problems, but I am glad you decided to continue. Breast milk is so nutritious. I nursed four children. Each experience was unique. First son-nursed for four months-average sized baby-around 50% on growth chart. Second son-nursed for six months-very chubby and big baby-95% and above on growth chart. Third my daughter--nursed for 11 months-not chubby but big-90% on growth chart. And last son, nursed for 9 months, was shinny and small until age 2, then his height took off, but he is still skinny. I really think that genetics has more to do with growth rates, especially if you have a healthy baby and she is taking breast milk regularly.

  28. Good to hear you are feeling confident about her health and growth now. She is gorgeous. Very cute!

  29. She seems so tall! She looks very healthy--you're making the right decision to stop worrying about it. I was a teeny tiny (breast-fed) baby as well, but it is just my genes. I am still short, but I don't think formula would have made me any taller, lol.

  30. ADORABLE!! Glad she and you are in good health! Can't wait to see your dress and good luck with finishing hers.

  31. Beautiful, both of you. Let me add, my second son was born big but didn't grow much. He was still wearing newborn diapers at 10 months. The pediatrician used to joke that I was starving him. He is now 6 feet 2 inches tall with 200 lbs in tow and cannot even fit an arm into a newborn diaper!!! Corinne

  33. Sorry I missed the post on the b/fing. My youngest, who will be 9 on Monday, pretty much hovered in the minus 5th percentile on weight until she was about 3. I b/f her until about 14 months and luckily, we had a great ped who said she was growing and meeting all her milestones, she was just making her own curve!

She didn't hit 20 pounds until after her second birthday and is a perfectly healthy, funny, sweet, lacrosse-loving 9 year old now.

Kudos to you for trusting your instincts.

I am so glad the tests came all back fine. You are so right - enjoy your gorgeous little girl!

  38. You know, sweetie, I need to tell you a story. But before I do that, you really need to use your own intuition. Is she "on track"? for weight, intellect and all those other measures that a mother knows?

My daughter was so small (although not born especially small) that as a junior in high school, the school had to special order a special band uniform for her!! In the whole U. S., there was not one small enough!! But, for somebody so well grounded and so self confident, she did fine. Only problem....she reached puberty in her first year of college when she was away from her family and very vulnerable! That was very, very hard. But, now at the age of 35, she is a married woman, an equine surgeon, a PhD student, a 5 foot 7 woman with a bra size of 34D!

Don't worry so much. Your angel will be just fine!
