The November issue of Burda is here!

One of the main themes of this month's magazine is special occasion gowns in Christmas red. I have absolutely nowhere to wear such an extravagant dress, so we'll just skip right over that section.

Jacket 110 did not appeal to me at first. They've got it made up in a very heavy quilted fabric, and it looks bulky and unflattering. But the line drawing is actually quite nice. I can see it in some tan suede-backed-sherpa, with the collar and cuffs on the sherpa side. Or maybe one of those thinner quilted sequined fabrics JoAnn's is currently carrying.
Not that I need another jacket project, but I really like this one -119- especially in velvet like the magazine has it made in. The muted mustard yellow is very nice. I think this design is super cute. The back shoulder yoke meets the back seam in a V.

I'm a sucker for a crisp pleated skirt. Here, the pockets extend up into belt loops, and the front pleat is doubled. This design is 120.

I like this simple little polo shirt, 121, but not the folding inside collar. That will be easy enough to switch out.

So, what are your favorites?

  1. I do love the lines of that quilted jacket...Hmmm, I think it has possibilities!

  2. I skipped over the evening gowns, too. They don't fit my lifestyle. I pretty much liked everything you listed. I liked that quilted jacket better after looking at the line drawing. I always get more out of the line drawings.

  3. The lingerie was my favorite! A guilty pleasure to make myself something silky and pretty, and DH will surely be happy to pick up the fabric bill this time!!!

  4. Like you I really liked that skirt, number 120. I think this one is definitely my favourite this month. I really like the front pleats and those pockets are a nice feature. That velvet jacket is really nice too but I think it's a bit beyond my sewing skills at the moment.

  5. I don't know, I was pretty excited about the asymmetrical evening gowns myself, but then I have a "formal" Christmas dinner party coming up that it would be perfect for. :-)

I love the Jacket 119, and maybe if I can muster up the courage I'll give it a try. I'm also with Kristine on the lingerie--definitely going to have to try some of those! :-)

  6. I like your sherpa idea. You might want to take a look at Vogue Fabrics suede with minky attached. It's wonderful and soft. I saw some at the Expo this weekend and am planning what it needs to be made into.

  7. There isn't too much in this issue that I'm chomping at the bit to sew. Those gowns were nice...maybe for my daughter but like you I have no need. I do like that quilted jacket too, but only if it's not too puffy. NY Elegant Fabrics carries really lovely quilted fabrics; I might have to check them out.

  8. I'm loving that skirt! I hope to make that up very soon, but at the rate I'm going maybe I'll have it done by spring...

  9. I don't have the issue but I really like the pleated skirt and the polo tee. Those would fit into my lifestyle more easily than a quilted jacket or evening gowns.

  10. After skipping all Burda issues June to October, I could maybe buy the November issue. I really like jacket 110, although it's probably too difficult for my current sewing skills. I also like the lingerie, especially 133-134.
The plus section (137 and 141 in particular) is more to my liking than the rest of the magazine but I'm a 38 and those patterns start with a 44. Isn't that a pity? But maybe my mom is interested - we'll share the magazine.

  11. You know, I didn't give that quilted jacket more than a quick glance when I got my magazine yesterday. However after reading your post I went back and looked at the line drawings and it might not be so bad with a fabric choice different than the bulky quilt version shown.

  12. I was also drawn to the same pieces you listed here. I especially like the velvet jacket. It's similar to one I made up recently, but all the little differences make it something I think I'd like even more.

I'm sorry about your wadder. I've noticed that McCall's has a lot of tops with humungous sleeves like that. I had to cut off half the width of the sleeves for one I made. That's a lot of fabric!

  13. That quilted jacket would look great without all that puffiness. That said, take a look at this Jean Paul Gaultier jacket here: http://www.luxury-shops.com/1_search/detail.php?ID=15329&category=10&subcat=38&designer=25. Imitation is the sincerest form....
