Newlook 6615 - Offwhite dress w/ black braid details

This is one of my semi-recent pieces. Here is the front view:

Here is the back view:

I've read several people complain that this dress would look too maternity, so here's the side view. As long as you have good posture (I usually don't!) it looks fine, because there isn't any extra fabric gathers under the rib cage band.

I hand sewed the black braid around the neckline and rib-cage band. Actually, I got this sewed in 3/4 of the way around the neckline before I noticed it was backwards! Very dumb, I know. I added a full lining to it. This gal avoids slips at all costs!

As you can see from the pattern envelope, the neckline was suppose to end in a V. Well, it was very low and didn't pass DH's Modesty Meter for church, so I had to sew a little piece in the middle.

I'm currently in love with puff sleeves. Stay tuned, you're sure to see more of them sewn up here.

  1. Hi Amanda!! Really cute dress!! Do you think the little ties in the back are necessary? I'm asking 'cos I'm 53 and REALLY don't want to look "expecting"!!
I love your braid trim & the wee modesty piece!! (Lucky you for having a church to go to!!)

  2. i don't think it looks the slightest bit maternity. then again, the clothes i'm wearing these days are probably the little dresses you have an utter distaste for - but that are figure friendly for me :) BUT maybe that makes me an expert - your dress looks NOTHING like some of the sundresses i'm wearing these days.. you're doing fine. :)

i love the fabric - pretty!

and i give you an A+ for trusting hubby on the modesty advice. good choice. :)

  3. Rhonda,
No the ties aren't necessary, but they do cinch the dress in a bit and gives you more of a waist.

    Heidi,
I know that looser fit looks good on some people. I don't hate it, I just don't like it on me. I DO like that there are choices out there for people who aren't in high school and don't want to wear skin tight clothing. It's nice to see tunic length tops on girls instead of the belly button exposure of past years, KWIM? I did wear this dress out for dinner before I put in the middle piece, and felt the world was staring at me. So DH and I usually see eye to eye on modesty issues.

    Hugs,
    Amanda

  4. i was just trying to be funnier than it might have come out. :) i think you choose clothes that are very beautiful for your body type - YOU LOOK GREAT!

i do need a looser fit because of my body type and have been thankful that there are options that are more flattering than the straight styles from a few years ago... WISH i could wear some of them, but ah, genetics would not allow for it. :)

i love dove's new beauty campaign with normal looking women - that EVERY woman deserves to feel beautiful... full dresses or tailored... freckles or tanned... curly or straight... tall or short... too skinny or with a little extra padding :) slim-fitting or full and flouncy - we ALL deserve to FEEL beautiful!

  5. I found your blog through Patternreview - thanks for the nice comment on my latest project. I love NL 6515 on you - very cute and not maternity at all! You are right - it helps not to have any gathering under the band - I will remember that as well for future tops that could potentially look that way!

  6. This looks great! I love the braid and the extra little modesty panel. It's a great idea since so many patterns are cut rather low these days.
